Entertainment Overview

The Arts

The three-week Adelaide Festival of Arts, Australia's oldest arts festival, takes place in February and March of even-numbered years. It's a cultural smorgasbord of outdoor opera, classical music, jazz, art exhibitions, comedy, and cabaret presented by some of the world's top artists. Recent highlights include Berlin's Schaubühne production of Nora and Cielo Che Danza (The Dancing Sky). Visit www.adelaidefestival.com.au or contact the South Australian Visitor and Travel Centre for more information. The annual, three-day WOMADelaide Festival of world music, arts, and dance, which takes place in early March, makes noise and raises consciousness on stages in Botanic Park; see www.womadelaide.com.au for details.

For a listing of performances and exhibitions, look to the entertainment pages of the Advertiser, Adelaide's daily newspaper. The Adelaide Review, a free monthly arts paper, reviews exhibitions, galleries, and performances and lists forthcoming events.

Nightlife

There's something going on every evening in Adelaide, although clubs are especially packed on weekends. Cover charges vary according to the night and time of entry. Nightlife for the coming week is listed in Adelaide (Scene), a pullout section of Thursday's edition of The Advertiser. Rip It Up is a free Thursday music-and-club publication aimed at the younger market. Onion, published fortnightly on Thursday, is Adelaide's top dance music magazine. dB, a twice-monthly free independent publication, covers music, arts, film, games, and dance.

Bars along Rundle Street and East Terrace are trendy, while Hindley and Waymouth streets are lined with traditional pubs. North Adelaide's O'Connell Street buzzes every night, and the popular Sunday-evening beer-and-banter sessions really pack in the crowds.
