Canyon, On the Way to Uluru
Fodor's Review:
Kings Canyon, in Watarrka National Park, is one of the most spectacular sights in central Australia. You may recognize it from a scene near the end of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, when the actors in full drag costume ascend the main path. Sprawling in scope, the canyon's sheer cliff walls shelter a world of ferns and woodlands, permanent springs and rock pools. The main path is the 6-km (4-mi) Canyon Walk, which starts with a short but steep climb to the top of the escarpment; the view 886 feet down to the base of the canyon is amazing. The trail then leads through a colony of beehive sandstone domes, known as the Lost City, to a refreshing water hole in the so-called Garden of Eden halfway through the four-hour walk. All this is visible during the half-hour scenic helicopter flight over the canyon and range from Kings Canyon Resort (A$220 or A$115 for 15 minutes).
