An important navigational landmark for 19th-century pioneers -- you can still see their signatures in its base -- is Chamber's Pillar, a solitary sandstone column rising 170 feet above the red plains of the northwest Simpson Desert. Over millions of years, oxidation and minerals created the pillar's red-and-gold hues, which are most dramatic in the late-afternoon sunlight. To reach Chamber's Pillar Historical Reserve, drive 119 km (74 mi) south of Alice Springs on Old South Road (mostly unpaved), then turn west at Maryvale Station homestead. The next 41 km (25 mi) are suitable only for high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles.
