Ningaloo Reef Marine Park

Fodor's Review:

1,512 km (937 mi) north of Perth, 550 km (341 mi) from Monkey Mia.

Some of Australia's most pristine coral reef runs 251 km (156 mi) along the coast of the Exmouth Peninsula, very far north of Perth. A happy conjunction of migratory routes and accessibility makes it one of the best places on Earth to see huge manta rays, giant whale sharks, humpback whales, nesting turtles, and the annual coral spawning. Exmouth makes a good overnight base for exploring the marine park.

The beauty of Exmouth doesn't end at the seashore. Also worth seeing near Exmouth is the Cape Range National Park, including the Yardie Creek Gorge, a ruggedly beautiful area that's excellent for an Outback holiday. Covering more than 123,000 acres, the national park includes red-rock canyons, limestone ranges, and 50 km (31 mi) of pristine beaches. The abundant wildlife includes emus and red kangaroos. A highlight of the winter season is the profusion of wildflowers, which include the Sturt Desert Pea and the Bird Flower. Follow N.W. Coastal Hwy. north 1,170 km (725 mi) to Minilya turnoff; Exmouth is 374 km (232 mi) farther north.
