Safety and Precautions
You'll find Perth a safe city to visit; there aren't any "no-go" neighborhoods, though there are some precautions you should take. Pickpocketing isn't a particular risk, but it's best to keep your personal belongings close, especially in busy shopping areas. Don't leave valuables—such as cameras—in the car when parked overnight at hotels or motels, or when visiting attractions. For your personal safety, avoid walking alone, especially late at night. There are instances of assault on Transperth trains and at suburban train stations, despite security guards and closed-circuit television monitors. A strong police presence—both on foot and on horse—usually ensures that late-night hot spots like Northbridge and Fremantle—are safe, though there are long lines for taxis, especially in the early morning hours when the nightclub crowds start to go home. Alcohol and impatience are a troublesome combination. It's best to try and avoid Northbridge when the clubs start to close around 2 am.
