South-West Wine Region Sights

Hay Shed Hill Review

Winemaker Michael Kerrigan—formerly chief winemaker at neighboring Howard Park and Madfish Wines—has taken the reins at Hay Shed Hill with the view of producing "modern wines from old vines." The hands-on approach in using the best grapes from the 30-year-old plantings at Hay Shed Hill has won show awards and lavish endorsements by wine writers. The tasting room breaks from the usual Margaret River vernacular architecture—no rammed earth, timber, and stone here, rather a lovely white-painted clapboard building, polished concrete floors, and pitched ceiling. As the name suggests, the building is the original hayshed on what was a dairy farm. The adjacent winery has now been turned into a pleasant café (open 9-3.30) overlooking the vineyards, where you can get a casual breakfast or lunch—pizzas, curries, and cold meat and cheese platters. Also available is a large selection of Australian and imported cheeses from Spain, France, Italy, and the UK.
