Melbourne Central YHA Review

This budget hostel is run by Youth Hostels Australia (YHA), an organization that likes to occupy heritage buildings or those with plenty of character. This new hostel is no exception; it's located in the former Markillies Hotel, a five-story Edwardian-era structure built in 1915 and once a working man's hotel. Today it has a great rooftop terrace (with barbecue) and the popular Bertha Brown's Bar. It is well situated near Southern Cross Station, the DFO discount shopping center, and Docklands. There are 43 multi-share or dorm rooms, with separate dorms for males and females, and eight double rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Other twin and double rooms share bathroom facilities with the dorms. While the name implies a younger crowd, the hostel is open to all ages, and guests with a YHA card get a 10 percent discount. It's recommended to book YHA accommodation well in advance. There are several kitchens, guest lounges with Internet terminals, and Wi-Fi throughout the building.
