Parliament House Review

Completed in 1992 the Parliament grounds are designed like a Fijian village. The largest building, a massive, thatched-roof bure considered the "chief's house" is built on the site's highest point, on a traditional high yavu (earth mound) and is the meeting chamber of Parliament. The 71 members of the House of Representatives and 32 senators convene here beneath traditional masi tapestries representing the three traditional confederacies that make up the Fiji Islands. Each house of Parliament uses a ceremonial mace to close sessions and Parliament cannot sit without the presence of both. If democracy has been restored to Fiji prior to your visit, you should be able to sit in on a session of Parliament.
