The big joke on Viti Levu is that the buses are the only things that run on time, which, like many humorous things, is also mostly true. Taxis abound and buses run frequently between the Nadi area and Suva during the day. The latter are a good way to meet locals, who are almost always happy to chat, and some public buses have luggage storage. The mainland is also a great place to rent a car, with only the paved two-lane Queens Road in the south and rougher Kings Road in the north. Travel times can vary considerably depending on road conditions and how long you have to wait before overtaking a public bus that may be slowing you down. Along the southern coast, there's plentiful parking in towns and at resorts of the Coral Coast and Sunset Strip. For the most part, attractions and hotels along Queens Road announce themselves and are evenly spaced; "If you haven't seen it yet, keep going" is a safe motto for those renting a car, although bus and taxi drivers are well-acquainted with the island.
