The County Hotel Review

Built in 1909 as the Hawke's Bay County Council headquarters, this is one of the few Napier buildings that survived the 1931 earthquake, and wood paneling, chandeliers, and clawfoot bathtubs conjure up that more gracious era. At the Chambers Restaurant ($$$-$$$$) highlights include halo syrah-braised venison pies, served with seasonal vegetables, and the caramel and banana steamed pudding. Churchill's Bar is decorated with quotes from the great man's speeches, and a cellar room is used for evening wine tastings.
