Boat and Ferry Travel
Three passenger boats cross between Paihia and Russell, with departures at least once every 20 minutes in each direction from 7:20 am to 10:30 pm from Paihia, and 7 am to 10 pm from Russell. The one-way fare is NZ$6. Or, join the car ferry at nearby Opua, about 5 km (3 mi) south of Paihia. It operates from 6:50 am to 9:50 pm, with departures at approximately 10-minute intervals from either shore. The last boat leaves from Okiato on the Russell side at 9:50 pm. The one-way fare is NZ$10 for car and driver plus NZ$1 for each adult passenger. Buy your tickets on board (cash only). Save time by crossing the Hokianga Harbour between Rawene and Kohukohu (with or without a car) by ferry.
