The West Coast in general is poorly served by the rail network, but one glowing exception is the TranzAlpine Express, which ranks as one of the world's great rail journeys. This passenger train crosses the Southern Alps between Christchurch and Greymouth, winding through beech forests and mountains that are covered by snow for most of the year. The five viaducts and 16 tunnels along this line, including the 8-km (5-mi) Otira Tunnel and the 73-meter (237-foot) Staircase viaduct, represent a prodigious feat of engineering. The train is modern and comfortable, with panoramic windows as well as a no-frills dining and bar service. The train departs Christchurch daily at 8:15 AM and arrives in Greymouth at 12:45 PM; the return train departs Greymouth at 1:45 PM and arrives at Christchurch at 6:05 PM. The one-way fare is $81-$116, round-trip $162 if returning on the same day.
