Porirua Market Review
For a look at the weekly market of a close-knit ethnic community, catch an early train or take a drive north of Wellington on State Highway 1 to Porirua and hit the morning-only Porirua Market. The stalls sell everything from eggplants and pineapples to colorful clothing to woven basketry and beadwork. Entertainers and hoarse-voiced evangelists play to the crowd. If you get hungry, there are food stalls galore selling curry and roti, chop suey, banana pancakes, and nearly every other treat you can imagine. The stalls open at 5:30 am but close at 10 am sharp.
