Playa las Coloradas is at the start of the Parque Nacional Desembarco del Granma, the national park honoring the Granma landing. It sprawls across Cuba's southwestern end and is covered by woodlands, by a dry region of cacti and steep terraces, and by lagoons filled with marine life. The Monumento de Desembarcadero, near the park's entrance, is a huge replica of the Granma built on the exact spot where Castro and his rebels ran aground. You'll find a map showing the rebels' escape route, some revolutionary slogans, and a stage used for political events. The main road through the park runs from the monument to Oriente's southwestern tip. There are well-marked hikes off it, including the Morlotte-Fustete Trail, which leads to caves and sinkholes, and the Sendero Arqueológico Natural El Guage, which takes about two hours to hike and which passes mangroves, coastline, and areas purported to have Taíno remains.
