Avila Hotel Review

The right blend of old-world touches, modern amenities, alluring beachfront, and attentive staff makes this resort the place of choice for the visiting Dutch royalty (well, all guests actually). The well-run hotel on a delightful beach has blossomed around the 18th-century mansion at its center. You'll find every comfort in the modern wings—the Octagon Wing has spacious rooms, sophisticated stone-and-wood decor, flat-screen TVs, and glorious balconies overlooking the ocean; the Blues Wing has waterside wooden decks, whirlpool tubs, and well-stocked kitchenettes. The hotel's ease with mixing classic European with modern is evident in the main lobby, which is dressed like a prim European parlor, with gilt mirrors and gas lamps on one side, and a clean and stark reception on the other. Dine under the bulb-lighted boughs of a tree at the Belle Terrace restaurant or at Blues, a gem for its nightlife scene. A unique site for weddings, the Octagon Museum is housed in an 18th-century cupola on hotel grounds.
