You won't find brand-name shops at Plaza Uvero Alto, which is a convenient shopping center for the hotels in the remote Uvero Alto area of Punta Cana. Especially useful are a bank and outdoor ATM, a money exchange, followed by Internet access, a small pharmacy, gift shops, and two minimarkets (one in the front, the other in the back row of booths). Here you can get sundries like sunscreen and deodorant at prices much cheaper than in the hotels. Behind the first row of enclosed stores, visit the colorful kiosks full of handicrafts, paintings, ceramics, and other gift items. Most shopkeepers here, although very friendly, don't speak much English, so be prepared to practice your Spanish. For beautifully designed jewelry with larimar and amber as well as other locally made novelties, visit Tesoro Caribeño (No. 5, front row of stores), where the owner speaks fluent English. There's also a branch of the Politur (tourist police) in the plaza.
