$, La Romana
Fodor's Review:
With its whimsical Victorian fretwork, this resort sits on an exceptional, palm-fringed ribbon of white sand protected by a snorkelable coral reef. Prices were raised after some improvements, and the caliber of clientele also increased. Overlooking the glorious new sea-view pool and new Oceana seafood restaurant is the impressive new Club wing. It's good-looking, and at $25 per person more, well worth it. Its oceanfront suites with kitchens are fab and a steal at $120 more per couple. The renovated Metamorphous Spa definitely invites a visit; a nature walk in the jungle outback features open-air wooden huts for massage. The proactive kids' Explorers Club (open until 10 PM) raises the family profile substantially.
