Hiking
Grand Étang National Park & Forest Reserve. Mountain trails wind through Grand Étang National Park & Forest Reserve; if you're lucky, you may spot a Mona monkey or some exotic birds on your hike. There are trails for all levels—from a self-guided nature trail around Grand Étang Lake to a demanding one through the bush to the peak of Mt. Qua Qua (2,373 feet) or a real trek up Mt. St. Catherine (2,757 feet). Long pants and hiking shoes are recommended. Expect to pay $25 per person for a four-hour guided hike up Mt. Qua Qua, $20 each for two or more, or $15 each for three or more; the Mt. St. Catherine hike starts at $35 per person. Grand Étang, St. Andrew. 473/440-6160.
EcoTrek. This company takes small groups on day trips to the heart of the rain forest, where you'll find hidden waterfalls and hot-spring pools. A half-day hike to Seven Sisters Waterfall ($55 per person) is suitable for the reasonably fit; full-day adventures to other destinations are more strenuous. Port Louis Marina, Lagoon Rd., St. George's. 473/232-7777. www.ecodiveandtrek.com.
Henry's Safari Tours. The personalized hiking excursions here include trips through rich agricultural land and rain forest to remote waterfalls, to the summit of Mt. Qua Qua, and personalized tours to other fascinating spots. Woburn, St. George. 473/444-5313; 347/721-9271 in the U.S. www.henrysafari.com.
Telfor Bedeau, Hiking Guide. Over the years Telfor Bedeau has walked up, down, or across nearly every mountain, trail, and pathway on the island. He first began hiking at age 23. That was in 1962. By now, he has hiked more than 13,000 miles (21,000 km) over, around, and through Grenada. Even well into his 70s, his experience and knowledge of the trails and his inexhaustible energy and patience make him an excellent guide, whether it's an easy walk with novices or a strenuous hike with experts. Soubise, St. Andrew. 473/442-6200.
