Kingston and the Blue Mountains

Blue Mountains

Strawberry Hill. A 45-minute drive from Kingston—but worlds apart in terms of atmosphere—this exclusive resort was developed by Chris Blackwell, former head of Island Records (the label of Bob Marley, among many others). Perched in the Blue Mountains, the resort has an infinity pool, spa, and offers pure relaxation in Georgian-style cottages. This is one Jamaican property not for beach buffs but for those in search of great food, thanks to its on-site restaurant, which, on a clear day, offers unbeatable views over the capital city. The cottages survey the Blue Mountains from expansive porches, most with an oversized hammock. Every bed has an electric mattress pad to warm things up on chilly evenings; mosquito nets surround you, and because there's no air-conditioning, guests usually prefer to keep windows open. Guests are given cell phones to use during their visit. Pros: stylish accommodations with breathtaking mountain views; cool retreat from the heat, great for hiking or exploring nearby coffee plantations. Cons: remote location a distance from the beaches; limited on-site dining options. New Castle Rd., Irishtown, Kingston. 876/944-8400. www.islandoutpost.com. 12 cottages. In-room: no a/c, kitchen, Wi-Fi. In-hotel: restaurant, bar, pool, spa. Meal plans available.
