Hiking in Martinique

Hiking

Two-thirds of Martinique is designated as protected land. Trails, all 31 of them, are well marked and maintained. At the beginning of each, a notice is posted advising on the level of difficulty, the duration of a hike, and any interesting facts. The Parc Naturel Régional de la Martinique (9 bd. Général de Gaulle, Fort-de-France. 0596/73-19-30) organizes inexpensive guided excursions year-round. If there have been heavy rains, though, give it up. The tangle of ferns, bamboo trees, and llanai vines is dramatic, but during rainy season, the springs and waterfalls and wet, muddy trails will negate any enthusiasm.
