This 17th-century sugar estate hasn't looked so good since its glory days. Rushing water cascades over the old wheel at the rear of the fieldstone restaurant, which now houses a conference room, too. Tour groups stir things up when they do lunch in the restaurant, where the menu reflects fresh local products. Groups on a budget can triple up in the renovated former slave quarters. Better digs are the simple cottages with rough-wood beams and (some) mahogany four-posters. A museum showcases Leyritz's famous banana figurines and reveals how plantation rooms would have looked in centuries past. The resort sits on 16 lush acres that are more than an hour from the airport, so you will need a car to explore the north coast. The museum and tour of the grounds is EUR 5, if you do not have lunch, which is a recommendable prix fixe for EUR 20.
