There are no coin-operated phone booths. Public phones use a télécarte, which you can buy at post offices, café-tabacs, hotels, and bureaux de change.
To place a local or interisland call you have to dial all 10 numbers, beginning with 0596 and then the six-digit number. To call Martinique from the United States, dial 011-596-596 plus the local six-digit number (yes, you must dial 596 twice). If calling from Guadeloupe, dial 0596 and then the six digits. Numbers with the 0696 prefix are for cell phones. To call the United States from Martinique, dial 001, then the area code, then the local number.
