Almost hidden on a quiet side street, the family-owned Hotel La Playa sits above the glistening green waters of Isla Verde. There's nothing fancy here, just 15 rooms in a motel-style building. What is exceptional is the oceanfront location, which comes without an oceanfront price tag. A plant-filled courtyard leads to a small bar where you can enjoy the cool breezes off the water. The restaurant, on a deck over the water, is famous for its hamburgers.

I just returned from a stay at Hotel La Playa. Their website and various web reviews made it sound like it was a decent, yet affordable, place to stay on Isla Verde. I was highly disappointed in my experiences at the hotel. It is no "oasis", as their website claims. The rooms are dirty, the sheets are dirty, there were spiders, mosquitos, and ants in the room/shower and the mattress was thin and flimsy. It was difficult to get hot water in the shower and there was almost no water pressure. When I complained about the problems, the person at the front desk acted as though there was nothing he could do. I also learned that the hotel uses solar power to heat their water so if it's a cloudy day, don't expect hot (or warm) water in the shower. One final warning - the bar area can get very loud and you'll be able to hear everything in the room when you're trying to get to sleep.
