Ruta Panorámica Driving Tips

Ruta Panorámica Driving Tips

Rent from a nationally recognized rental car agency. Should you break down on the Ruta or need a tire change, the national chains are more able than local agencies to dispatch assistance or a provide a replacement vehicle. Ensure your rental has a spare tire and a jack and have the roadside assistance number handy in the event that you need it.

Fuel up at each opportunity. There are few gas stations on the Ruta; don't wait for a ¼ tank before you fill up.

Avoid driving after dark. The Ruta isn't lit and driving after dark can be dangerous. Occasional patches of washed out road aren't uncommon, and they're sometimes impossible to see at night. Also, there are few, if any, food or gas services available once the sun goes down.

Pack drinks and snacks. Because services are limited along most of the route, your options may be limited when hunger strikes. Be prepared and bring your own drinks and snacks. However this is an agricultural region; bananas, pineapples, and plantains are grown throughout the area. Along your journey you'll encounter roadside stands where men sell just-picked fruits and vegetables from the backs of their trucks. These also make a great snack option, just be sure to wash all produce thoroughly.

Invest in a good map. Most hotels have free maps, courtesy of the tourism board; these are highly detailed maps worth picking up. If you can't find one, invest in a good road map. Although it may not include all the numbered roads that make up the Ruta, it's better than nothing.
