An edgy, off-beat inn run along the lines of a Berkeley California commune, this eco-friendly hillside getaway seemingly miles from anywhere has an irresistible rustic appeal. It's not for everyone, but convivial, gregarious folks with a taste for barefoot back-to-basics will love it. Edgy and funky, it's even been the setting for a J. Crew catalog shoot. Mainhouse guests share the common kitchen made of roughhewn planks splashed with tropical ice cream pastels, with zinc for a roof. Hammocks are slung across the large wooden deck while four other self-catering casas dispersed among fruit trees have their own bathrooms. Guests in the basic dorm-like rooms shower outside in roofless solar-heated stalls.
