Posh boutique spots like this seaside escape in Esperanza are raising the bar on lodging in Vieques. Proprietors Marsha and Robin Shepherd spent many years in St. Barths, so running a chic island property like Malecón House comes naturally to them, and it shows. The 10 rooms at this immaculate place are decorated with rich wood furniture, luxurious stone flooring, and high-end linens. Four of the rooms open onto private balconies that drink in the ocean directly across the street, while all rooms feature marble baths and comfortable beds with playful splashes of color as accent. A small pool and common terrace—where breakfast, featuring Marsha's fresh baked muffins and scones is served—is open all day for relaxed lounging. Some of the island's best restaurants are a minute's stroll down Calle Flamboyan.
