The area code for St. Lucia is 758. You can make direct-dial overseas and interisland calls from St. Lucia, and the connections are excellent. You can charge an overseas call to a major credit card with no surcharge. From public phones and many hotels, you can dial AT&T or MCI Worldcom and charge the call to your calling card to avoid expensive rates or hotel surcharges. Phone cards can be purchased at many retail outlets and used from any touch-tone telephone (including pay phones) in St. Lucia. You can dial local calls throughout St. Lucia directly from your hotel room by connecting to an outside line and dialing the seven-digit number. Some hotels charge a small fee (usually about EC50¢) for local calls. Pay phones accept EC25¢ and EC$1 coins. Phone cards can be used for local calls, as well as for international calls.
Your cell phone may work, but roaming charges may be prohibitively expensive. Cell phones can be rented from Cable and Wireless offices in Castries, Gablewoods Mall, Rodney Bay Marina, and Vieux Fort; or, if you have an "unlocked" cell phone that uses GSM technology, you can purchase a local SIM card for $20 (which includes an $8 call credit) at Digicel offices in those same areas. The cards can be topped up at hundreds of business locations around the island.
