Offering a connection to the island's elegant past, the venerable hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While the building dates from 1780, it did not become a hotel until 1948. Rooms are filled with antiques, mahogany furnishings, and Oriental carpets, and lush gardens meander around the fenced-in compound, creating a comfortable base for folks who like to get out and about. Guests gather poolside for breakfast and conversation. Although the hotel shines brightly, its neighborhood is run-down, so take a taxi back after nighttime excursions. Continental breakfast isn't offered for the least expensive rooms.
