Eastern Alps: Places to Explore

Hermagor

The swift Gail flows along the southwest edge of Carinthia through small scattered villages with ancient churches and aged, often wooden, farmhouses. The narrow valley is peacefully soft, with many old linden trees, but its fir-treed slopes rise steeply, particularly on the south side, and craggy peaks peer from behind them. The main town in the Gail valley is Hermagor, situated approximately in its center. Hermagor is best known as a summer resort, offering hiking, climbing, and swimming in the nearby Pressegger See, but it also has skiing in winter.
