Eastern Austria: Places to Explore

Purbach

Purbach, like the nearby wine villages of Breitenbrunn and Donnerskirchen, retains traces of its medieval fortifications. Look for the bust of a Turk atop a chimney in the town center; legend has it that when the invaders withdrew in 1532 one badly hungover, sleepy Turk missed the retreat, and fearing retribution, climbed down a chimney for safety. He was discovered, became an honored citizen, and lived in Purbach happily ever after. The wines of this area, the reds in particular, are outstanding and merit stopping for samples.
