Burg Forchtenstein

Burg Forchtenstein Review

In summer people throng to the small village of Forchtenstein for its strawberries, but its enduring dominant landmark is the medieval hilltop castle Burg Forchtenstein. This formidable fortress was built in the early 14th century, then enlarged by the Esterházys around 1635, and twice it successfully defended Austria against invading Turks. Captured enemy soldiers were put to work digging the castle's 466-foot-deep well, famous for its echo. As befits a military stronghold, there is a fine collection of weapons in the armory and booty taken from the Turks; there's also an exhibition of stately carriages.
