Bergkirche Review

At the crest of Esterházystrasse perches the Bergkirche, an ornate Baroque church that includes the strange Kalvarienberg, an indoor Calvary Hill representing the Way of the Cross with life-size figures placed in small grottos along an elaborate path. At its highest point, the trail reaches the platform of the belfry, offering a view over the town and this section of Burgenland. The magnificent wooden figures were carved and painted by Franciscan monks more than 250 years ago. The main part of the church contains the tomb of Joseph Haydn, who died in 1809 in Vienna.
