Burg Bernstein Review

This massive medieval castle, built in the 12th century, became a hotel in 1953, with indoor plumbing being the only concession to modern life. It's owned today by a descendant of the Count Almásy family. You can still find the Count's books on the shelves in the corridors, and his room is preserved the way he left it. The large guest rooms look much as they must have in the mid-1800s; the reception salons are decorated with antique writing tables and armoires. Dinners, prepared by Countess Berger-Almásy herself, are served with regional wines in the Rittersaal, a baronial hall in the 18th-century style.
