Salzkammergut: Places to Explore

Fuschl

Fuschl is so close to Salzburg that many attendees of the Salzburger Festspiele choose to stay in a hotel here, enjoying urban comforts while getting to savor rural pleasures at the same time. On Route 158, the town is on the Fuschlsee—a gem of a clear, small, deep lake whose bluish-green water is ideal for swimming and windsurfing—surrounded by a nature preserve once the hunting domain of Emperor Franz Josef himself. There's not much to do in Fuschl, the beaches being very limited in number, though those willing to hike can reach an extremely narrow strip on the northern shore that is especially popular with nudists. The town is noted for its many good places to eat and spend the night, including Schloss Fuschl, one of the finest establishments in the Salzkammergut.
