Lovers of scenic beauty should not leave the Hallstatt region without taking in Gosau am Dachstein, considered the most beautiful spot in Austria by 19th-century travelers but unaccountably often overlooked today. This lovely spot is 10 km (6 mi) west of the Hallstätter See, just before the Geschütt Pass: you travel either by bus (eight daily from Bad Ischl to Gosau) or car. The village makes a good lunch stop, and, with its many Gasthöfe and pensions, could be a base for your excursions.
