Schloss Fuschl Review

This dramatic 15th-century castle enjoys a spectacular perch atop a promontory over the Fuschlsee. About 16 km (10 mi) from Salzburg, this former hunting lodge has been warmed up with quaint red-and-white shutters. Inside, finely frescoed ceilings, intriguing passageways lined with antique furniture, and a sumptuously outfitted restaurant make an haute Alpine splash. The suites and superior rooms are regally splendid, and though the standard rooms are more modern, some are surprisingly small. In fine weather dining is outdoors on the magically beautiful stone terrace. Opt for the trout caught in the lake (which is unpolluted by motorboats) and then delicately smoked in the smokehouse on the premises. The hotel presides over an 85-acre estate, replete with 9-hole golf course, sailing, and a gorgeous private beach and pier.
