The Danube Valley Feature

Hiking

You could hardly ask for better hiking country: from the level ground of the Danube Valley hills rise on both sides, giving great views when you reach the upper levels. There are Wanderwege (marked hiking paths) virtually everywhere; local tourist offices have maps and route details. You can hike in the Mühlviertel from Freistadt to Grein and even arrange to get your pack transferred from hotel to hotel. Around Linz you might retrace the route of the Linz-Budweis horse-drawn tramway, Continental Europe's first railway, or trek from one castle to another.
