Schloss Schallaburg

Schloss Schallaburg Review

From Melk, take a road south marked to Mank to arrive at the restored Schloss Schallaburg (dating from 1573), a castle featuring an imposing two-story arcaded courtyard that is held to be the area's finest example of Renaissance architecture. Its ornate, warm-brown-terra-cotta decoration is unusual. The yard once served as a jousting court. Many centuries have left their mark on the castle: inside, the Romanesque living quarters give way to an ornate Gothic chapel. The castle now houses changing special exhibits.
