The Danube Valley: Places to Explore

Stein

A frozen-in-time hamlet that has, over the years, become virtually a suburb of the adjacent city of Krems, Stein is dotted with lovely 16th-century houses, many on the town's main street, Steinlanderstrasse. The 14th-century Minoritenkirche, just off the main street in the pedestrian zone, now serves as a museum with changing exhibits. A few steps beyond the Minoritenkirche, an imposing square Gothic tower identifies the 15th-century St. Nicholas parish church, whose altar painting and ceiling frescoes were done by Kremser Schmidt. Stein was the birthplace of Ludwig Köchel, the cataloger of Mozart's works, which are still referred to by their Köchel numbers.
