Vorarlberg: Places to Explore

Schwarzenberg

One of the region's most colorful villages is Schwarzenberg. The artist Angelika Kauffmann (1741-1807), who spent most of her life in England and Italy, considered this her real home. Even though she became one of the most renowned female artists of the 18th century, few people in Austria east of the Arlberg mountains knew of her until her picture appeared on a 100 Schilling note issue of the now-extinct Austrian currency. You can see several of her larger works in the Baroque village church, including a painting of the 12 apostles she did at age 16 and an altar painting of the Annunciation from about 1800 (the Landesmuseum in Bregenz has her portrait of the Duke of Wellington).
