Ston

Today Ston is best known for its fresh oysters and mussels, grown in Mali Ston Channel and served in a handful of year-round waterside restaurants in Mali Ston. Historically, the town dates back to 1333, when it was founded by the Republic of Dubrovnik. It's made up of two separate settlements, Ston (on the main Dubrovnik-Orebic road) and Mali Ston (just off the main road), which were each individually fortified; a system of defensive walls was then built to connect the two, effectively controlling land access onto the peninsula. Dubrovnik's chief interest in Ston was its salt pans, out of which the republic made a considerable profit. Of the original 5½ km (3 mi) of walls, 3 km (2 mi) remain intact. Begin your visit in Ston, then follow the walls on foot to arrive in Mali Ston, about 15 minutes away on foot.
