Dakovacka Katedrala (Dakovo Cathedral)

Dakovacka Katedrala (Dakovo Cathedral) Review

In Dakovo's town center is the majestic redbrick, neo-Gothic Dakovacka Katedrala, which was commissioned by the Bishop of Dakovo, Josip Juraj Strossmayer (1815-1905), and designed by architect Frederick Schmidt. Consecrated in 1882 after two decades of construction, the three-nave structure is distinguished by two steeples towering to 274 feet, by beehivelike cones on either side of the entrance, and by a pinnacled cupola. The inside walls feature colorful biblical scenes—some representing the life of St. Peter, the cathedral's patron saint—painted over 12 years by the father and son team of Alexander and Ljudevit Seitz. The striking blue ceiling is dotted with gold stars; and the floor is paved with impressive red, yellow, and black checkered tile.
