Vis
Closed to foreigners until 1989, the distant island of Vis is relatively wild and unexploited. To get here from Split, you can either take the SEM Marina fast catamaran service, or a 2½-hour Jadrolinija ferry ride to arrive in Vis Town. Built around a wide harbor, the town is popular with yachters, who appreciate its rugged nature, unpretentious fish restaurants, and excellent locally produced wine. The pretty fishing village of Komiza is 11 km (7 mi) from Vis Town. Here you're just a 40-minute boat ride away from the Modra Spilja (Blue Cave), often compared to the Blue Grotto on Italy's Capri.
