Larnaca

The seaside resort with its own modern airport, 51 km (32 miles) southeast of Nicosia, has a flamboyant Whitsuntide celebration, called Cataklysmos, every June, as well as fine beaches, a palm-fringed seaside promenade called Phinikoudes, and a modern harbor. Larnaca is especially known for its pottery, mainly found in craft workshops located in the narrow streets of the Old Quarter. Also look for blown glass, carved wood, silverware, and copperware; local olive oil and honey are other good buys. A project to create the island's largest passenger cruise terminal and marina within Larnaca has been approved and could substantially change its sleepy character, but at the time of this writing the project's start date is unclear.
