Kutná Hora

For a little macabre fun, as well as the chance to see a beautiful Czech village, head to Kutná Hora. There are a number of interesting sights in this historic silver mining town about 70 kilometers from Prague. In the city proper, a must-see is the Cathedral of St. Barbara. This magnificent building was built in 1388, and reflects the majesty and importance of the town back then. For a more in-depth look at life in the mines; visit the Czech Silver Museum, which includes a tour of a medieval mine.

The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and proudly boasts of its "10 centuries of architecture" covering the gamut from gothic to Cubism.

But the most famous site in Kutná Hora is the Sedlec Ossuary. Less than 2 km outside of Kutná Hora, the ossuary, aka "Bone Church," is a morbid memento mori. More than 40,000 human bones have been arranged into fantastic shapes, chandeliers, and other decorative arrangements.

The city holds a couple of annual festivals. In spring, around the beginning of April, Awakening Kutná Hora is celebrated, marking the beginning of the "tourist" season, when castles and other monuments are open to the public. Period peddlers, dancers, and fencers celebrate the city's mining history at the Royal Silver Festival held every June.
