$$$, French, Sankt Annae Kvarter
Fodor's Review:
When it opened in 1853, the intimate Els was the place to be seen before the theater, and the painted Muses on the walls still watch diners rush to make an eight o'clock curtain. Antique wooden columns complement the period furniture, including tables inlaid with Royal Copenhagen tile work. The nouvelle French four-course menu changes every two weeks, always incorporating game, fish, and market produce. Legend has it that Hans Christian Andersen used to come here for a hot meal, and he actually dedicated a poem to this place. Jackets are recommended.
