When to Go to East Anglia & Cambridge

Summer and late spring are the best times to visit. Late fall and winter can be cold, windy, and rainy, though this is England's driest region and crisp frosty days here are beautiful. To escape crowds, avoid the popular Norfolk Broads in late July and August. The May Bumps, intercollegiate boat races, are, confusingly, held the first week of June in Cambridge. During the summer "long vac" (and also over the Easter and Christmas holidays), Cambridge is empty of its students, its life and soul. To see the city in full swing, visit from October through June, although in summer there are enjoyable festivals, notably the Strawberry Fair (mid-June), and the Folk Festival and Arts Festival (both July). The world-famous Aldeburgh Festival of music and the arts takes place in June.
