Victoria at Holkham Review

A colorful, whimsical hideaway, this hotel on the Holkham Hall estate is managed by the earl of Leicester's family. The atmosphere is more laid-back and family-friendly than the austere exterior suggests. Inside, the shabby-chic decor contrasts with a hip and sophisticated vibe. Bedrooms are on the small side, but comfortable, with elegant, handmade furniture and modern bathrooms. Most romantic is the Raj Room, with its claw-foot tub and ornate, precipitously tall (if somewhat creaky) bed. The hotel restaurant is one of the finest in the region, with an emphasis on modern European cuisine. The dune-backed Holkham Beach (where the final scene of Shakespeare in Love was filmed) is a few minutes away; show your room key to avoid the access fee of a couple of pounds.
