Anchor & Hope Review

Hearty meaty dishes at wallet-friendly prices emerge from the open kitchen at this permanently packed, no-reservations leading gastropub on The Cut (between Waterloo and Southwark Tube), a few doors down from the excellent Young Vic contemporary theater. Pot roast duck, Herefordshire beef, deep-fried pig's head, pumpkin gratin, and cuttlefish with bacon stand out. Bear in mind that it's noisy, cramped, informal, and always overflowing. That said, the kitchen is highly original, and there are great dishes for groups—like the famous slow-roasted shoulder of lamb. Eager diners wait for a table over a drink in the pub's convivial saloon bar, and be prepared to share a wooden dining table with others once seated, too.

    A real Gastropub

    I think most people visit this place because they are going to one of the theaters nearby. However, I'd be happy to eat here everyday for the rest of my life and even though it is a fair distance from either my workplace or home I get there as often as I can. Everything from the kitchen is seasonal and expertly cooked. The menus are interesting without being pretentious and this is everything a gastropub should be. The only compettition as far as I'm concerned is it's sister place 32 Great Queen Street.

    Good Food & Good fun

    Packed and noisy but after waiting 20mn with a very good glass Albarino Rias Baixas, we had a very pleasant diner with fresh products and good choice in a wide and open wine list.
