For the best lake views, take a wooden-launch cruise around Derwentwater. Between late March and November, cruises set off every hour in each direction from a dock at the shore; there's also a limited winter timetable. You can also rent a rowboat here. Buy a hop-on, hop-off Around the Lake ticket (£9.25) and take advantage of the seven landing stages around the lake that provide access to hiking trails, such as the two-hour climb up and down Cat Bells, a celebrated lookout point on the western shore of Derwentwater.

    Worth more than one trip.

    I used this launch service more than once having used it as a bus service to get over and around the lake Derwentwater. Then following something I'd read on www.keswick-tourist-infomation.com the local site I booked for an end of day cruise, where you are taken out to the middle of the lake, drift and drink wine, while the guide talks of the history of the area. It was awesome.
